Around 20 years ago, then CEO of the world’s biggest gold miner honoured me by republishing our interview in the company’s annual report. Those pages were duly framed and for years hung proudly on a prominent wall at our office. For me, and hopefully those who stopped to read it, Bobby Godsell’s words served as a reminder to always keep perspective.

Apart from the regular work-related interaction, our lives have intersected many times over the years – one of his daughters did a short internship at our business; another was my youngest’s High School “bestie”; and I served alongside his formidable wife Gillian on the Parktown Girls Governing Body. So I’ve observed the 68 year old Godsell from various angles. Continuously awed of his composure and ability to retain balance no matter how trying the circumstances.

Given the seemingly endless storm of bad news about our country and its prospects, we’re all badly in need of some Bobby Godsell wisdom. There is much to savour in those recorded 45 minutes. Like a great book, this is an episodes which will be worth revisiting. Often. I certain shall, especially when dark clouds seem to be overbearing. Nothing is only one-dimensional. There is no one-way bet. Godsell’s calm is the perfect antidote to those why try convince us otherwise.
