'For rural homesteaders and suburbanites, no matter where they live on the globe, fast, reliable internet connectivity is on its way—from outer space.'

I received an email yesterday from Jon Bates, the advertising industry icon who retired decades back to build his family's farm in the KZN Midlands into Fordoun, one of SA's best hotel/spa resorts. Jon says nearby Nottingham Road is booming. He describes house purchases and building as "astonishing" – with local schools Clifton and Michaelhouse enjoying their highest ever intake of new pupils (he's closely involved with Michaelhouse so would know). Reason: the relocation of business people taught by lockdown they can actually work from anywhere. Such relocation to the most beautiful parts of countries looks sure to accelerate – with the final piece in the puzzle being delivered by none other than Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. As the story below from our partners at the Wall Street Journal explains, the space race between these super entrepreneurs is bringing an unexpected benefit – competition to deliver high speed internet access anywhere on earth. – Alec Hogg
