Practical reminder of how the Internet changes lives – in a good way

Hi there,
Durban curry 2 sliderYesterday provided a practical reminder of how much the Internet has improved my life.
When in Durban on business I usually check into The Hilton. But this time it was booked out for an ANC Youth League event. So I was considering the noisy establishment where our presentation was held, but while doing the online booking an alternative popped up. It has turned out to be a top quality, well priced Guest House – a fabulous place I’d otherwise not have discovered.
On arrival at King Shaka I had a couple hours to kill around lunchtime and as Durban is SA’s home of curry, that was the obvious choice. A Google inquiry brought up great reviews of an Umgeni Road eaterie that would never have hit my radar. Waze got me to the place in nine minutes and the curry was so exceptional (and super value) that, like the Guest House, its excellence demands a return visit.
The broader benefit of alternatives being exposed by the Internet is how this kicks in the magic of the free market system. That rewards meritocracy and punishes those who might have fallen prey to the arrogance, bureaucracy and complacency that comes when businesses no longer need to try as hard. Thanks Durbs.
Best
Alec

Hi Alex, tks for a great presentation in Durban yesterday evening.which certainly was food for thought  and made me wish I had taken an interest in investing in the stock market many years ago.

Some great advice offered last night which I will put to use in the next few months

I went home last night and purchased a copy of The Intellegent Investor though my Kindle ( US 13.99)
the learnings from which I hope will enable me to achieve a better balance to my small portfolio.
PS Ben Graham is also a Reverend.
Finally I presume you ate at the Brittania Hotel by the Connaught flyover. .
Cheers ,Will be following you on Biz News..

Hi Alec,
I read your posts with interest every morning and thoroughly enjoy each and every topic.
Today’s topic sparked a need to respond.

In addition to the benefits you have mentioned,I find that businesses which don’t up their game and participate in the available communication technology, will not see any form of growth.

So too, the ‘older’ generation who regard IT with suspicion, I’m afraid they too will go the way of the dinosaur.

I am bordering that age group (65) and do admire those older folk who do embrace technology.

Thanks for your insightful topics,
Regards,
Steve Williams
