A golden trophy to commemorate a golden moment in Japan’s rugby history

Talk about rubbing it in – a R5 million trophy to commemorate Japan’s greatest (and South Africa’s worst) result in professional rugby – the two-point victory in Brighton at the 2015 World Cup last September. Some might argue that Ireland’s first Test victory over the Springboks at Newlands last month was more humiliating for South African rugby, but we’re not expecting the Irish to make a large trophy to remind us of that bleak day. – David O’Sullivan

Tokyo – A pure gold rugby ball, made in honour of Japan’s shock win over South Africa at last year’s Rugby World Cup, went on sale in Tokyo on Wednesday for 38 million yen (about R5.1 million).

The shining 2.8kg ball was displayed at Japan’s oldest department store chain, Mitsukoshi.

The Brave Blossoms produced arguably the biggest shock in World Cup history when they beat two-time champions South Africa 34-32 in September, their first win at the tournament in 24 years.

Organisers also hoped the gold ball could inspire further success when Japan host the next World Cup in 2019. – Sport24
