By 11 o’clock today, “a significant majority” of the 27,7 registered million voters had cast their votes in the 2024 national and provincial elections.
That was revealed at a lunch time media briefing by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The IEC says there has been a “steady flow” of voters, and according to “early indications” the voter turn-out in these elections “may match or just surpass” the 66% mark.

Overall, the commission reported a “smooth start” to voting day.
By 7 o’clock, 93% of the network of 23 292 000 voting stations were reported open.
However, a number of voting stations opened late because of community protests in some areas; as well as delays in materials handling and a shortage of security escort services in certain areas.
But by 12 o’clock the election process was deemed to be “in good progress” with “minimal incidents” – including the late delivery of ballot papers in some places – being dealt with.
Meanwhile, the IEC gave the assurance that every voter will be assisted to vote before the voting stations close tonight.
