Rob Hersov: Release the beast – there is a way out of our ANC-ruled morass

In his BizNews missive, Rob Hersov suggests a “government of national rescue” (GONR) to oust the ANC, proposing a coalition with various parties, including the EFF and MK. He argues this could end ANC corruption by removing its cadre network and installing competent officials. He acknowledges the challenges but believes it could lead to a more stable, corruption-free South Africa.

By Rob Hersov*

In my last (written) BizNews missive, I ended the piece with three thoughts to at least consider, one of which was the “long shot option” of killing off the ANC once and for all with the DA + MPC parties + PA + EFF + MK coming together in a government national rescue (“GONR”) or, as I prefer, a government of VoetsekANC (“G-VANC”).

The main result of this would be that the ANC cadre money waterfall would dry up immediately. And the bloodsucking cadre vampires would squirm out.

To remove the debilitating corruption from the system in one fell swoop, we need the cadre network to be deprived of their money lifeline and, to do that, we need to decapitate the ANC, and completely remove that monster from power.

As we all know too well, the ANC has brought Nigerian-levels of corruption to our country via cadre deployment (thanks to spineless Cyril and crew).

Cadres are tied to five-year contracts and are linked to whomever has political office. With the ANC out of the game, this evil cadre network would collapse (note: thanks to the efforts of Leon Schreiber and the DA, we know who they are). And we can quickly replace these kleptocrats and ineptocrats with competent people, of which there are many available, and all easy to identify and agree upon.

How then to banish the dreadful ANC monster to the fiery pits of hell, where it belongs?

The long shot.

Form a government of national rescue – GONR – with the DA and IFP as anchor tenants (25%), and other sensible centre-right parties alongside, namely, Action SA, VF+, PA and BOSA, and then team up with the EFF and MK.

There, I said it. Team up with the EFF and MK.

GONR would sit at 55%+. And we may even get some ANC MPs to defect to join our merry crew and push the GONR to close to 60%.

All non-negotiables get put aside and the GONR only allow competent people to be appointed in the positions that matter in the executive (from DGs downwards) and legislature and, importantly, into what remains of the cadre-infested SOEs.

The Presidency and Cabinet would be a circus of egos and entitlement and clashing ideologies (only the EFF doesn’t really have an ideology, as they are in the opportunistic business of selling snake oil) and if I try to make suggestions of which party gets what ministry it will rile so many people up, you won’t be able to suspend your disbelief anymore, or read further.

Please at least try to see this option as possible but improbable (much like CapeExit and KZNExit).

It would be Voetsek ANC at last, and welcome to a whole new South Africa. And in the process, we would be listening to most of the electorate.

However, within two months the egos will be at war in the cabinet, as you would expect, but the “competents” down the line will remain in place and can get on with their jobs. We will have unplugged the corruption factory – the ANC – from power.

And the cadres can go and line up for their R350/month grant.

The other, other option: ANC +EFF + PA.

We must be careful not to try and force the marriage of enemies. The chaos that will ensue is not appealing at all. And the markets do not like chaos.

A coalition of the ANC, EFF and PA could work simply because it is a balance of power. And delivers 51% of the electorate.

To get things done these three must cooperate and, because there are so many other options, they can’t really play king-maker politics or hold each other to ransom.

No one has the power to change the constitution or even the economic policy to the extent that you and I fear. And Gayton McKenzie has sworn he will fight to the death to protect property rights.

The dream of the electorate is a balance of power and an ANC that has no choice but to self-correct and dismantle cadre networks or face complete destruction.

This balance of power is the real advantage of democracy.

Finally, the first issue will be the best interests of South Africans and not the best interests of the ANC.

Ok, now back to reality.

So, let’s take a breather and consider the reality of this, so you don’t think I am a complete madcap, hellbent on the destruction of the ANC, without a thought for the damage that such an unholy gathering might rain upon our already fragile structures and institutions.

As of today, the ANC has been slashed to the bone, has heard the cries of disgust from the electorate and, as Omry Makgoale stresses, the ANC urgently needs to be on the “naughty step” to self-correct.

There are already 71 ANC MPs (all unemployable) that are not going back to Parliament and one of those is the antisemite Naledi Pandor.

Cyril may be spineless, but it seems the electorate are not, and it will be clear to the ANC that they will be forced to dismantle the cadre network or face complete annihilation in 2029. If you were in their shoes, would you do nothing?

Political organisations are not all that different to business in the sense that culture is everything.

A mishmash like the GONR will rapidly result in such culture shocks and internal battles that it will serve to strengthen the opposition ANC, who will be able to say to the voters: “this is what we were trying to protect you from”.

ANC voters need an alternative to support, and these alternatives must have some ANC-like characteristics with certain DA-like characteristics, even though working with the DA may be perceived by many to be anti-transformation.

Right now, we are in an exciting moment where ANC voters can be persuaded to vote in 2029 for a moderate, conservative free market/capitalist government that understands the culture and values of the average South African, but the conditions for that to happen will require stability over the next five years.

The ANC has been shaken to its foundation, deservedly so.

Already the bad and the ugly are being cast aside and one can expect this ANC to begin cutting the poisonous limbs – the cadres – from their tree.

This is the ANC’s last chance.

Who would be better to dismantle the evil and destructive cadre network than the ones who installed it?
