It’s fashionable at this time to compile “best of…” lists. leading the pack for me comes from the US Chamber of Commerce which poked fun at the American legal system by listing the 10 most ridiculous lawsuits of 2015.
Topping them was the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which sued photographer David Slater on behalf of a monkey. Slater had positioned a camera to take “selfies” of the monkey and published them in 2011. PETA tried to claim the pictures were the monkey’s copyright, not Slater’s to publish.
Close behind was bank robber Todd Kirkpatrick who sued Washington State for $6.3m for personal injury after pointing his gun at a police officer who’d interrupted his heist – and getting shot twice for his trouble. Bronze medal went to New Yorker Jennifer Connell whose eight year old nephew was so excited to see her at his birthday party, his jump knocked the auntie over – breaking her wrist. Connell sued her nephew for $127 000.
Clearly South Africa’s Parliament isn’t the only place on earth housing crazy people.
