Among the upsides of an 11-hour flight from London is the opportunity to catch the latest movies. It’s a window of opportunity for one whose leisure time is a running competition between too many unread books, the English Premiership, Springbok Rugby and Strictly Come Dancing.
So over the weekend, it was wonderful to catch the recently released movie, Churchill. Particularly because of the leading role given to the British leader’s close and loyal pal, Field Marshal Jan Smuts. It promises to introduce the iconic South African to a whole new audience.
For former newspaper editor turned book author Richard Steyn, the movie couldn’t have come at a better time. Last month he released a follow up to his excellent Smuts biography – called Churchill and Smuts: The Friendship. I’m not the only one itching to get my hands on it.
