Budget Day 2019 – Eskom to dominate, creative solutions craved

As you open this, I’m happily ensconced in the “lock-up” at Parliament, completely cocooned from the outside world and working through this afternoon’s Budget speech and supporting documents.

It’s the journalistic equivalent of a six hour sprint to absorb sufficient detail to produce something understandable when our embargo lifts as finance minister Tito Mboweni starts to talk at 2pm. Be sure to make Biznews.com your first port of call.

This year’s address is certain to be dominated by Eskom, where mismanagement and corruption have created a challenge of Gordian Knot dimensions. The Treasury team have been hard at work trying to find solutions for months already. They’re a smart bunch, so expect some creative proposals.
