The Daily Insider: Chris Pappas breathes fresh air into SA’s politics

During the worst of the Zupta plunder, we found different ways to retain sanity. Mine was drawing on wisdom of the ancients, those long-dead rational beings who reminded us no matter how awful things might appear, this too shall pass.

It helped. Instead of being sucked into the pervading mood, I was able to appreciate otherwise invisible green shoots. We’re into a different set of challenges today. But once again, rays of sunshine are there for those prepared to look.

One of them is in the form of a remarkable young man from the Mooi River district, 30-year-old Chris Pappas, whose team pulled off the surprise of the November Local elections. Pappas is now mayor of the uMngeni municipality after the DA won 13 of the 25 seats – its first KZN council victory.

Chris is the kind of fresh air, the type of sweeping new broom SA’s politics desperately needs. So if you can, steal away for half an hour to watch the recording of our interview. It’s truly one of those “hope springs” engagements. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/gD_g3tznTAA
