The Daily Insider: Babylonstoren’s UK version sponsors the Chelsea Flower Show

Our London correspondent Linda van Tilburg keeps an eye on what Saffers are up to in the UK. Especially those having an impact in the land which invented the old school tie.

It was with some excitement that over the weekend she shared news that Naspers chairman Koos Bekker and wife Karen Roos have achieved the ultimate British societal breakthrough. Their UK version of Babylonstoren, an estate called The Newt in Somerset, is the official sponsor of this year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show.

The event, formally known as the Great Spring Show, features displays of the finest flowers from the UK’s top nurseries. Held since 1862, it attracts visitors from all over the world and is always attended by members of the British Royal Family. Linda says iconic horticulturalist Keith Kirsten used to exhibit proteas and other SA flora but SA representation has been limited since. Until this year, of course.
