For only the second time this year, the contrarians among us will today celebrate Friday the 13th. It’s my absolutely favourite day because of a life-changing event that happened 30 years ago. For many, however, they’re grateful the day only happens once in some years and a maximum of three times in others. The superstition about Friday the 13th is so widely held there’s even a word for it – triskaidekaphobia, from the Greek words for Friday and Thirteen.

South Africans will be hoping this Friday the 13th turns out to be a really bad day for one Elias ‘Ace’ Magashule (61) who appears in court today on criminal charges relating to a R255m asbestos roof audit scam pulled by the provincial government he led for nine years. Charges against Magashule’s have been long anticipated. But because of his elevated position in the ruling ANC, cynics believed he’d escape justice. The ANC secretary general is easily the biggest fish thus far for NPA director Shamila Batohi. A prelude, perhaps, to former president Jacob Zuma. Then hopefully former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste.

Batohi’s ‘gradually’ phase has felt interminable for those watching developments, although she actually been in the office for under two years. With such a large shoal of miscreants needed to be scooped into the NPA’s net, the ‘suddenly’ stage could be exhilarating.
