đź”’ Aftermath: What will the world look like after the coronavirus?

The war against the coronavirus is in its early days, but still, many are asking, “What does the post-coronavirus world look like?” In this episode, which features content from the Bloomberg P&L podcast, we take a look at some of the potential impacts the pandemic may have. There’s no doubt that our economy will be changed and reshaped by the coronavirus, with many businesses destroyed and many livelihoods lost. But what else does the post-corona world have in store for us? – Felicity Duncan

There’s no doubt that the coronavirus pandemic will have a lasting impact on the world. Once the disruption and difficulties of the lockdown are behind us, we will be facing a changed economic and social reality.

One certainty is that we will see many small businesses destroyed. Despite laudable government efforts to save them, many small companies simply don’t have the cash reserves to see them through a multi-month shutdown.

Another certainty is that big companies will be seriously rethinking their operations, from supply chains to office space. Working from home will likely become far more common, and supply chains are likely to become shorter and more resilient. How this will affect emerging markets is an open question. If large economies pull production back home, the prospects for places like SA don’t look great.

Finally, we can also expect some major changes to our healthcare systems. The pandemic has laid bare health inequalities and drawn attention to how well-stocked and well-supplied our hospitals are. Once the crisis passes, we can expect some soul searching about how best to protect people’s health and some increased investment in our health systems.
